Dr. Mar Theophilus Ashraya Bhavan
” The poorest of the poor, Totally illiterate, completely downtrodden & Marginalized, the most unfortunate Cancer Patient deserve Help, Support, Prayer & Consolation.”
The Bombay Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Church has been associated with various social and philanthropic activities in the State of Maharashtra, Goa and some parts of Gujarat and Karnataka since more than half a century, particularly, for the economically weaker and downtrodden sections of society. His Grace Geevarghese Mar Coorilos, Metropolitan (Archbishop), Diocese of Bombay is the President of the trusts and the activities and projects are planned and implemented under his able leadership and guidance. One of the recent projects under implementation is the Dr. Mar Theophilus Ashraya Bhavan at Nerul, Navi Mumbai, a shelter home for cancer patients and their relatives.
It is well known that a large number of cancer patients from all over India come to Mumbai for treatment. The Tata Memorial Hospital at Parel in Mumbai gets about 65,000 new cancer patients every year with another 4,50,000 coming for follow-up visits. It is seen that the majority of these patients are from extremely poor background. Most of these patients or their relatives accompanying them cannot afford accommodation in hotels or lodges in Mumbai during the treatment period. A large number of such people therefore live by the roadside, under flyovers, etc. while there are a few philanthropic organizations providing such people with shelter, such facilities are woefully inadequate.
The Diocese has therefore started the shelter home at Nerul from 1st August 2019 with a capital cost of Rs.3.5 Cr. to help some of these patients at least. The shelter home has capacity to accommodate around 30 patients/relatives at a time. Considering an average stay of 10 days per patient, around 1000 people will benefit from this shelter home per annum. The inmates are provided with comfortable stay, wholesome food and transport to Tata Hospital and back in a dedicated ambulance entirely free. The monthly expenses of about Rs.2.00 lakh for food, salaries of driver, cook, helper, electricity, water, petrol, etc. is met by the Diocese. It would greatly help if benevolent individuals/organizations support this cause through donations/sponsorship and make this a sustainable and growth oriented project for the benefit of poor cancer patients.
